Luxury Fashion Comes Home: Furniture, Dogs, Tableware and More

Graphic by Benjamin Schmidt for The Interior Review

No longer restricted to clothing as an expression of brand, fashion houses both big and small are on a mission to give your home and pet an infusion of high style. Step into this expensive and varied bazaar. What’s on offer? Just about anything, from expected accessories like cashmere throws and candles through to real curiosities like air mattresses, pizza boxes, and jump ropes

Early spoiler (and perhaps a surprising one): Saint Laurent has some of the least expensive things on this list, with one item coming in under ten bucks.

Loewe Home Décor

This funky Spanish brand has been high on the trending list and never fell out of favor with the avant-garde class. After testing the waters with a limited run of candles in surprising scents like “Tomato Leaves” and “Scent of Marihuana”, Loewe has doubled down on home goods in an artistic and unexpected way.

Who is this for? People who smoke pot as a fashion choice. The Flintstones. People who have flax anything. People who own the Sottsass wavy mirror. People who have stacks of books as tables. Yogis. Multilinguals.

What’s interesting? Unlike Prada, Loewe is motivated by raw ideas rather than glorified functionality. There is a rare sense of abstract indulgence in the offering that so rarely clears the strict juries of the finance and legal departments. Things like Shinzu Design’s leather-wrapped stones are far more experiential than a simple brand flex. There might be a slight sense of Western dadaism in play, but practicality still holds with products like the Cactus Doorstop and Mohair Blanket. Then, we must revisit the visionary work of resident perfumer Núria Cruelles, whose explorations are most easily encountered with the Home Scents Sample Set, but best crystalized by the “Scent of Marihuana” bar soap, a product so sure of itself yet guaranteed baffle an entire generation. Viva.

Saint Laurent Rive Droite Home Decor

Saint Laurent might have some of the least expensive items on this list, but they’re going to make you work for it. Laying it all on the line, Saint Laurent has identified two markets, Paris and Los Angeles, to begin infusing its Rive Droite lifestyle products into the culture. One store in each city will serve as the first to carry a line of lifestyle and home accessories in limited quantities, with even fewer items available for online purchase. After all, LA and Paris have long been the physical representations of what Saint Laurent has stood for. And shopping online will never really be a chic activity. Saint Laurent has a smaller, main line of lifestyle accessories, featuring collaborations with Baccarat and J.L Coquet.

Who is this for? Rich emo people. Lamborghini owners. Tony Hawk. Mick Jagger. Harry Styles. Miley Cyrus. Chainsmokers (actual habitual smokers, not the band). Skinny people. People who own multiple restaurants. Confused equestrians. Central Saint Martins students. Ex-scene people. Dream interpreters. Taxidermists.

What’s interesting? The prices of items from Saint Laurent Rive Droite collection are truly astounding. Not because they’re exorbitant, but they seem beyond arbitrary (even more so than Prada). I’ve maintained the roll dice theory for how luxury brands price things, which roughly assumes most products are priced based on rolling dice and writing down a few of the numbers they land on. No brand supports this theory more strongly than Saint Laurent, where a lighter goes for $8 and a matchbox goes for $15, but a pencil case (no pencils included) goes for a remarkably elegant $1,230.00. Many of the items feel like they were pulled from an extremely elegant amenity kit on a plane or a nice hotel.

Together with things like Polaroid cameras and skateboards, Saint Laurent Rive Droite’s offering calls to mind the magic of an early Urban Outfitters: extremely random objects, but not unaffordable for someone taking an extra shift working at the local pizzeria or movie theater.

As an aside, Saint Laurent is giving Hermés a run for its money with a robust equestrian range, including saddles by Butet and branded stirrups.

Bottega Veneta Furniture

You must remember that, before the trend-establishing virality of today’s brand, Bottega Veneta was once the rich, ambiguously-accented nerd of the fashion class. Always a little out of fashion, she lived far from school. She was wheatfields and woven berenia; a little muted but never musty. She basically wore the same thing every day. She wasn’t artistic and she wasn’t “open”. She lived for herself. Under Tomas Maier’s long reign, the house dabbled in furniture but never committed. Now under the leadership of Matthieu Blazy, Bottega Veneta has embarked and teamed up with radical Italian designer Gaetano Pesce, known for handmade resin furniture to create four-hundred gloopy chairs and a floor for Bottega Veneta's recent runway show, which are now for sale.

Who is this for? Pescatarians. Georgia O’Keefe. People with loft apartments. The VCs who funded Parade’s seed round. People who actually attended the Bottega Veneta Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show. Anyone at Miami Art Basel.

What’s interesting? The only thing available: four-hundred versions of Pesce’s chair, called “Come stai?” —Italian for “how are you?”. All of the blocky chairs come in the same basic, resin-dipped form, but feature unique patterns and a selection of simple illustrations.

Tekla + Jacquemus Bedding

Duvet cover in cotton - Tekla + Jacquemus collaboration.

Duvet cover in cotton - Tekla + Jacquemus collaboration

Time is of the essence, so we’re already updating this story with the latest out of France and Denmark: a crossborder collaboration of two emerging dynasties, textiles manufacturer Tekla and designer Simon Jacquemus. The outcome of negotiations is a strong but concise collection of summer-oriented bedroom-related goods, including sleeping clothes and sheet set.

Who is this for? Beach house owners. “‘Mountains or Beach?’ ‘Beach.’” people. Quirky people. Amused people. Australians. People who live in one-season locations. People who wear flip-flops. Fun people. Drew Barrymore after 2021. Gardeners. Nudists. Ex The Amazing Race contestants. Vegans. MENSA members. People who love Jacques Demy musicals.

What’s interesting? Jacquemus, as a brand, is the definition of French amusement park chic. It is as much a fun house as it is a beach house. The brand doubles down (perhaps a bit unseasonably, it’s cold in Normandy now) on summer-suitable bedding (all done in airy linen and circus-lined prints) and simple, pretty pajama sets. I’m yawning already (a good thing).

Where can I buy? Jacquemus, Tekla, and in-store at Jacquemus’s Avenue Montaigne location.

Ralph Lauren Home

The granddaddy of fashion for the home, Ralph Lauren always saw ready-to-wear and interior design as being –for lack of a better phrase– cut from the same cloth. When Ralph Lauren landed his own department in Bloomingdale’s back in 1970, he oversaw every detail of the space, down to the wood paneling design. Clearly simmering with inspiration but not yet perfected for the public, it would be over a decade before Lauren would debut a vast home collection in four signature motifs: Thoroughbred, Jamaica, New England, and Log Cabin. The market’s biggest loss was the 2016 discontinuation of Ralph Lauren Paint for the home.

Who is this for? People who celebrate Christmas Day in Greenwich, Connecticut. People who say they are “summering” somewhere. People related to anyone in this list. Mistresses. Whoever lives in The White House. People who actually participated in the Gold Rush. French Upper East Siders. People who don’t use computers (check out RL Home’s old website which is barely functional and requires Flash).

Kvadrat/Raf Simons Shaker System

Though the relationship between designer Raf Simons and textile manufacturer Kvadrat has been a long and fruitful one, it’s been limited to fabrics. For the first time, the partnership is producing a range of twenty-six gentle home goods in four colorways, ranging from cashmere throws and pillows to a few trays and sculptural objets. Raf Simons trained as a furniture designer before branching into fashion, so this feels natural. Now that Raf has ended his fashion label, it is to be seen whether will go back to his roots.

Who is this for? People who are ethnically Nordic but live in London or Berlin. People with low, long dogs, toddlers old enough to talk, or fully-grown lobsters running loose in their home. People who eat salad from wooden bowls. People who eat salad without dressing. The clog lovers.

What’s interesting? Here’s the hook: Simons has devised a custom, length-adjustable bar that allows for any of the collection’s items to be hung from it, inspired by the innovative Shaker wall systems found in early American settlements. The leather magazine strap is a stroke of genius.

Prada Home Decor: Prada Lifestyle Accessories

Prada Dog Raincoat

Notwithstanding the Prada Marfa print from Gossip Girl, one of the most unforgettable lifestyle/fashion crossovers I’d ever seen was a garden-tool set from Prada, way back in 2013. A handheld scoop, hoe, and clippers were packed away in a green canvas bag. Complete with gloves and an apron, the kit sold for just over two grand. Needless to say, I’ve never seen one in the flesh. I thought it would be the closest we’d ever get to Prada home goods. Lo and behold, the brand has gone all-in on in-home, featuring a strangely practical variety of products, including cutlery suitable for a campsite and dog raincoats.

Who is this for? People who have any relationship to Roppongi Hills, Dubai, Sentosa Island, or St. Petersburg. Some Parisians. Tourists. People who used to wear Ed Hardy but then got rich. Teenagers. Really good counterfeiters. People with condominiums. Tech executives taking a sabbatical to, “explore the world”. People with home gyms. “My dog is my child” people.

What’s interesting? Almost everything, as well as the price points. They seem especially really fake and random. Multiple cutlery sets are featured here. As well as an $1,170 playing card set. Water bottles. Lunchboxes. Some of the accessories are so commonplace that you’ve definitely seen the exact item at the dollar store. So, imagine the markup. Prada has always had a tech-fashion/hyper-sleek practical lilt, and this home collection feels like the extension of that, with a heavy lean into the gym. Even the basketball and rugby ball have skeletal carrying “cases”, which are really just a bunch of straps. The jackknife in an otherwise amusing collection is the studded pet collar.

Louis Vuitton Objects of Decoration and Louis Vuitton Home Decor

Louis Vuitton Pizza Box

Louis Vuitton maintains a highly collaborative and rare collection of furnishings to augment a fairly robust home decor and lifestyle accessories. Featuring everything from conceptually-oriented sofas by Frank Chou, totem poles and flower pots by Damien Langlois Meurinne to a custom hammock by Atelier Oï, most of these objects are one-offs and feature Louis Vuitton hardwares, fabrics, and leathers. Louis Vuitton also curates a slightly more accessible variety of goods for an incidental infusion of style around the home.

Who is this for? Philippe Starck disciples. People who love the Drum and bass and/or Drill genres of music. People who wear stilettos to work. People who love conversation. The unamused. Rich Youtubers in need of content (“😱 💀WE ATE PIZZA OUT OF A LOUIS VUITTON BOX (NOT CLICKBAIT)😱 💀”).

What’s interesting? Capitalizing on the well-worn trick of rebranding banal objects of everyday life, this is a strong collection of objects that could be easily broken or thrown away if they weren’t coated in the Louis Vuitton monogram. An eco-conscious streak with the presumably-reuseble monogrammed pizza box. Transform the first day of school with a box of branded paints. The kite was going to catch the wind at a bad angle and crash into someone’s beach setup regardless of whether or not it was Louis Vuitton. Given they don’t come with bindings, the skis are for conceptual display ONLY. The monogram blanket is to stay on the jet.

Versace Home Décor

Versace Lumiere Ashtray

When asked the classic cocktail question, “When the apocalypse comes, where will you go?”, my response is always, “The home section of the Versace store on Fifth Avenue.” Years on, I maintain the answer. Nowhere in NYC feels like more of an escape than the white and gold repository of decadence contained in the upper floors of the building. Like Ralph Lauren, Versace is a veteran in the space. Versace founder Gianni’s tragic murder in front of his Miami villa strangely punctuates how closely associated the brand is with being at home- a passionate ode to opulence and total, no-expense-spared comfort. Roman-style indulgence visually leads the creative direction. To this end, Versace has offered vivid table settings and novelties for years, with many items exclusively produced by Rosenthal. Versace has evolved its lifestyle offering to include more of the supporting cast needed to maintain la dolce vita.

Who is this for? People who buy designer clothes in Roblox. People who went to Studio 54 on a regular basis. Personal friends of the house. Lottery winners. Grandparents. Accident lawyers who advertise on the highway. People who live in Jupiter, Florida. City Girls. People who go to Las Vegas on a monthly basis. Some The Sopranos characters.

Versace Crete de Fleur Float Mattress

What’s interesting? The scope of what’s on offer is very wide and supports a singular lifestyle of debauchery and buying bottle service, funded by something extremely innocuous like farm equipment rental or being the sole importer of Mercedes-Benzes to a country. “Versace on the go” is a phrase that feels like the opposite of what Versace stands for, but is permitted according to this travel cup. More in line with the dynastic tone of the house is this bathrobe in black and gold. Shoot your Harvard Law School entrance application in the pool or crash in the living room with this inflatable mattress. Finally, having a cigarette after the divorce papers are signed is a time-honored tradition. Ash into this baroque tray.

Dior Home Accessories and Furniture

Miss Dior Chair by Philippe Starck for Dior

Christian Dior once said, “Instead of an impeccably decorated home, I would always prefer one that is more sensitive and alive, that evolves over time according to the lives and whims of those who live in it.” Despite (or because of) this, Dior maintains a strong collection of items within the range of Maison, featuring a relatively rational collection of home goods, including table setting pieces, notebooks, plus a smattering of pillows and candles. A recent collaboration with Philippe Starck has resulted in one of Dior’s first forays into actual furniture, debuting at this year’s Salone del Mobile 2022 in Milan.

Who is this for? Get Ready with Me TikTok people. People who stay in Paris for Fashion Week, actually attend the shows, then continuously extend their stay at The Ritz for months after. Dinner party hosts. People who wear driving gloves. People who smell like cotton candy. Champagne drinkers. People who don’t “do” window blinds. People who don’t know what Wayfair is.

What’s interesting? This box for one (1) human baby tooth is truly a thought. The series of books exploring the work of Dior creative direction will fill an empty shelf in the library. An unbelievably restrained and expensive home goods collection designed with Pierre Yovanvitch includes items like a tissue box feels like a direct conversation with Kim Kardashian’s recent venture into the home. The collaboration with Philippe Starck, called Miss Dior, is singular in focus, featuring a number of variations on a svelte, multifunctional chair. The chair looks as if it was urgently crafted from the liquid, metallic core of earth before being cooled and sold for Price on Application

Hermès Dog Products

As mentioned, Hermès has maintained a vast home collection for years, ranging from equestrian goods (the industry to which they owe it all) to leather-lined desks and cashmere backgammon sets. Now your local Hermès shop can double as the neighborhood pet store as the brand has expanded into dog accessories, offering essentials like collars, leashes, and food bowls.

Who is this for? Richard Saghian. Mohamed Hadid. Any current or former member of any Real Housewives franchise (as a splurge). Whomever developed 908 Bel Air Road. Non-native French speakers. Old French people. People who moor in Port Hercule.

What’s interesting? The Wouf Flying Disc, priced at $220. For one, it has a great name. And two, it essentially grants you the ability to either watch Man’s Best Friend chew on $220 or, if it’s energetic, go retrieve $220. The Carrying Bag for Dogs feels as natural to the brand as breathing is to life.

Tod’s Candles

This venerable, discreet brand (are we calling this “quiet luxury” now…?) has shyly dipped a suede-wrapped toe into the world of home with an extremely limited collection of candles. Ok, one candle, with a single scent, in six unique colorways.

Who is this for? People who read Goop or Robb Report. Pottery enjoyers. Designers who date designers. Fake Italians. Actual Italians. People who have been to Milan. Cool moms. People with walk-in closets. People who work for Europe-based investment banks.

What’s interesting? Not much yet, but there is a lot of potential. Tod’s has a remarkable legacy and an interesting position as a style staple. The ceramic jars containing the candle look very high quality and the orange colorway is a classic code. The leather pull tab is a delightfully organic feature.

Gucci Home Décor

While Versace’s long-running partnership with Rosenthal has reached heirloom status and Hermès’ explosively expensive home collection has been around for a few decades, it was Alessandro Michele’s all-encompassing vision as Creative Director at Gucci that really renewed the general public’s interest in the fashion house home market. His decadent interpretation of beauty (and brand) had an obvious home in the living room. He quickly capitalized on the concept with a collection of faux-vintage baubles and bold pieces of furniture; now expanded to pillows, candles, and more. It will be curious to see if the brand continues to pursue home decor after Alessandro’s sudden departure in November 2022.

Who is this for? Ex-steampunks. Rich goths. People who cosplay as Victorian-era nobles. Russians. Certain Italians. People who smoke indoors. People who have never opened a window. Actual vampires. People who want to look like they shop at flea markets. People who still have an apartment in the Chelsea Hotel.

What’s interesting? The floral wallpapers are some of the most competent items on offer. The candles have some tasteful scents and cool lids. Everything else looks like low-poly Sims 3 furniture.

Tom Ford Candles

Over the years, Tom Ford has curated a very specific atmosphere around his brand, both literally and conceptually. Showrooms are drenched in dark, glossy Macassar and chrome and smell strongly of wood and smoke. The story is one of rarity, age, and wealth. Emotionally, it’s a story of sex before romance and mystery before curiosity. The associations are so rich, one can almost taste the brand. Why then, Tom Ford hasn’t gone deeper into the home territory, stands as a strong question mark in this legacy. Now sold to Estee-Lauder, perhaps it’s a question of what is to come. For now, the brand offers a small array of Tom Ford’s signature scents in candle form.

Who is this for? Tom Ford lovers. Divorced men. Yacht owners. People who gamble. Ex-football players. Red-wine drinkers. People who have incorporated “fuckin’” into their daily, professional vocabulary. People who read newspapers in print.

What’s interesting? Ranging from a mere $99 to tame $135, these candles aren’t just among Tom Ford’s least expensive offerings, but also among the least expensive items on this list. That’s really to say you’re getting a bargain. From “Oud Wood” to “Lost Cherry”, all the classics are here.

Balenciaga Home Decor: Balenciaga Objects

At the time of this article’s publication, a recently-launched collection of homewares designed by Balenciaga has been removed from sale on the Balenciaga website following the fallout from a photo campaign promoting the collection. The campaign, produced by North Six Inc. and styled by Nicholas Des Jardins featured imagery of children holding teddy bears styled with BDSM elements. Images of child pornography are not protected under First Amendment rights, and are illegal contraband under federal law.
